ARTICLE ON "FEET HEALTH" WRITTEN BY OUR TRAINED SHOE-FITTER.
Feet healthcare is very important, it is therfore essential to wear suitable footwear that fits properly. Customers have become more comfort orientated. As any chiropodist will tell you one of the main causes of problems with the feet is badly fitting footwear they also claim that your feet mould into the shape of the shoes you are wearing so wearing good fitting shoes prevents a lot of foot problems as does regularly changing your shoes. Ideally, your everyday shoe should give plenty of room at the toes, have a cushioned sole and have a strap or lace-up to prevent your foot from slipping. It should also have a small heel or wedge - about 3/4in to 1.5in
Containing 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 19 muscles and 26 bones our feet set the alignment for the rest of our body.
The pressures generated on the foot from wearing very high or very low shoes can lead to all sorts of deformities and problems, such as claw foot- when a toe bends downwards and another toe bends upwards also hammer toes -when one toe bends downward.
Corns are caused when the bony part of your feet rub against shoes. Also bunions develope when joints in big toe no longer fit together and become swollen and tender so wearing shoes that are wide enough is very important. Spurs are calcium bumps that grow on bones in feet and standing for long periods of time and wearing badly fitting shoes make spurs worse.
Fungal infections are caused by damp feet and cause blistering and peeling. Changing shoes and socks regularly helps as does wearing shoes and trainers that have breathable and cooling properties.
People with medical conditions such as diabetes ect. need to be especially careful that their shoes are wide enough and cushioned to prevent friction. www.diabetesireland.ie
Young children also need to wear properly fitting shoes as they develope. Babies feet are made from cartilage which later developes into bones so wearing badly fitting shoes could deform the shape of their feet. www.drfoot.co.uk/childrens%20feet.htm www.footcaredirect.com

Many of our shoes and trainers are designed to be 'breathable' i.e. lets moisture out and keeps feet cool.e.g Skechers brand have designed Airators trainers for children which have a chamber inside sole that pumps air around inside the trainers when the pressure of the foot is applied to it, this circulation of air keeps the foot cool and dry.
Marco-Tozzi premier, Tamaris and Caprice brands have 'Antishock' built inside the heel this unique patented technology has been proved to be 50% shock absorbing thereby smoothing the step, relieving the back and looking after discs and joints.
